BCAL Saturdays – Maya Azucena Visits BCAL

On January 8, 2010, R&B songstress Maya Azucena visited BCAL to give a concert and to share some empowering words with our students. Afterwards she led a vocal workshop which left us all singing for the rest of the day.

We couldn’t get enough of Maya’s contagious energy so she has joined BCAL Saturday for a weekly performance workshop. See you there!

BCAL Saturdays – Capoeira Workshop

Capoeira is a communal form of Brazilian martial arts that incorporates musical instruments such as the berimbau and the bandera.  Capoeira challenges your body to move in ways you never thought it could before. The teaching artist for Capoeira,  Mestre Alameo taught an intensive five week capoeira workshop at BCAL. Mestre Alameo is a Brazilian native who is very passionate about this martial art. Although Portuguese is his native tongue, he, along with his fellow capoeiristas, were able to deliver great instruction to our students on how to perform the proper techniques of this art form. Not only is it known for the physical aspect of bodily movement, capoeira also involves a musicality and gracefulness unlike most other martial arts that focus on offense and defense.
